Hopefully I can answer a couple of your questions. I think the simplest solution to your problem would be to get an identical motherboard, if possible, and replace the dead one. If that’s not a possibility you can generally replace a motherboard with a different product on a Windows XP machine, install that board’s drivers, and continue working without too many issues. If your friend has used that to create a recent backup then using the installation medium to reinstall on a new machine will be much simpler.
